About
Hello!
I’m Jenna—a writer, editor, and word nerd. What that means is I’ve dedicated the majority of my life to the written word, totaling about a decade’s worth of projects, experience, and publications. I’ve worked with companies creating literature for their customers, clients producing beautiful essays, and on my own writing stories to entertain and delight readers. I love using my creative know-how combined with the mechanics of the written word to inspire the imaginations of others in whatever they are doing. Emails and essays, websites and stories, resumes and curriculum—if words are involved, I’m there.
Education
I’d been blessed with the utter surety that I wanted to write ever since I first learned what those squiggles on a page were. From that certainty, I pursued writing education pretty aggressively, snatching up AA degrees in the art of the written word from West Valley College and then ultimately a BA in English from San Jose State University.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, I took the unemployed lemon life handed me and made lemonade in the form of a UX Design certificate from Google. Taking courses in UX design helped me learn more about how to design products and write copy that are accessible and aesthetically pleasing, taking my skills up another notch.
Experience
Like all good English majors, I first applied my education to becoming a teacher for writing, reading, and test preparation. From that experience, I studied grammar, mechanics, and style in a depth most native speakers of the English language don’t otherwise get. I learned the inner workings of the written word, how to apply it, how to manipulate it, how to teach it to others, and in so doing cemented my passion for all things wordy.
Simultaneously, I started freelance writing and editing. I became the go-to for editorial leadership and assistance with all things writing, editing, and designing for individual and professional projects. I created company literature and marketing brochures, wrote internal and customer-facing communications, edited papers and blog posts, researched products and services, designed websites, advised on applications, wrote curriculum, and guided clients along their own writing journeys.
But perhaps my greatest experience is as a science fiction and fantasy author. I run my own website, socials, and brand and participate in multiple organizations for speculative fiction authors. I work alongside other writers and editors, artists, publishers, and reviewers to get stories in front of readers around the globe.
Personal Interests
I may be a word nerd, but I am equally as happy talking about and engaging in my other hobbies. Like all writers, I am an avid reader and spend much of my time consuming as many books as I feasibly can in any given week. My favorite genres are science fiction and fantasy, but I also read some light horror, contemporary, historical, and YA and middle grade stories as well. When I can be pried away from writing and reading, I like to decompress by streaming old and new TV/movies, playing video games, participating in TTRPGs, attending book clubs, puzzling with friends, or crafting projects big and small.
